As you would expect from an area where golf courses are a plenty and where such a large and varied golfing community exists, there will inevitably be numerous golfing competitions open to players of all standards.

If you enjoy the buzz of competing against others then the Costa del Sol is a great place to test out your hard practiced golfing techniques and who knows maybe even pick up one of the many prizes usually provided by the golf clubs and sponsors at each of the tournaments.

There are in fact a wide choice of competitions open to players of all standards each week. And they are truly varied and include members only, all ages, male and female, societies, couples, groups, senior, parent and child, junior, clubs, pitch and put, you name it there is a competition out there designed for you to put your hard practiced skills to trial.

Golf Competitions in Spain

Another option is to If you join the Andalucian Golf Federation ( annual membership around 60 Euros per person ) this will open up many more possibilities as far as competitions are concerned and is also a good opportunity to practice your Spanish amongst the friendly atmosphere of the local Golfing community. Via the federations web site you can amongst other things check up on your handicap and browse one full calendar year in advance most of the competitions on offer to its members at each of the courses on the Costa del Sol. Speaking by personal experience I can say that these tournaments are well run, there is always an amiable and inviting atmosphere to all entrants, it is also very family orientated not to mention some good prizes to be won in all categories with many extra treats being raffled at the end of the days play.

Small courses BIG PRIZES. For enthusiasts of the more relaxed par 3 game there is an annual 2X9 circuit sponsored by the best par 3 courses on the coast and include, Benalmadena Golf, Manga Marbella, La Siesta , La Noria, Coto la Serena, Casares, Alhaurin, Greenlife, Monteparaiso and El Candado. The 2x9 tournaments are held between March and October of each year with the Gran Final being held at the end of season. Competitions are played approximately each month at each of the courses and consists of two rounds ( 18 holes in Total ) with the Stable ford method of scoring . There is a good selection of prizes on offer to the winners of each match with the top 30 scorers playing in the final. For more information and to register please contact one of the courses mentioned above. Telephone numbers can be found here

There are numerous Golfing Societies operating up and down the Coast so check out your local news print for details.

One popular company offering competitions on a daily basis through to Saturday is the Leisure Breaks Group. They currently offer competitions open to all ages and are held at Santa Maria, El Chapparral, Parador, Greenlife, Calanova and Cabopino. For more info please contact Julie via the Leisure Breaks website.

GUINESS BOOK of RECORDS - If you would like to participate in what will hopefully be the worlds largest single golf competition please contact the caddy master at the La Cala Golf Resort . This should be a fun day out and at only 20 Euros per player is very reasonably priced. The La Cala Golf complex is now the largest in Spain with 3 superb 18 hole courses and a small 6 hole par 3 course situated at the David Leadbetter academy.

Update: A great day was had by all players on Sunday the 22nd July at the La Cala Golf resort when not only was some 11.000 Euros raised for the Unicef charity, 614 golfers broke the existing world record and will hopefully enter into the Guinness book of records.
